Westpark

The Westpark is one of the most beautiful green areas in Munich. In addition, numerous public institutions, such as the Psychocorrection Center, are located here. The multi-purpose sports center, the Audi House, hosts games of the Bavarian national basketball team.

Westpark, has always been considered an industrial, working-class neighborhood.  There are still many cooperative and rental apartments here, as well as extensive industrial areas between Boschetsriederstrasse and Kistlerhofstrasse in Oberzendling. The Siemens facility still occupies large areas. The main factory on Hofmannstrasse once employed more than 25,000 people, and today a new neighborhood called “Südzate” has been built on the parking lot of former Siemens employees.

Five tower blocks of 16 stories and five multi-family houses are being built along the Bauerbrunnerstrasse. Some 1,000 rental and owner-occupied apartments, supermarkets and hospitals have already been built. Day care centers, an elementary school and a private gymnasium are planned. Soon 300 new student apartments will be rented.

The Munich City Treasury has purchased a tower house with 68 apartments primarily for its employees. Individual one- to four-bedroom apartments with a total living space of up to 186 m2 are also available to external customers at prices of up to 13,000 euros per square meter. The upper floors of the building offer spectacular views of the Alps.

So interest in the area is growing as the area is redeveloped and improved. Of course, the magnificent Westpark also plays a role in Zendling’s growing popularity in the real estate market. Shady lanes, several lakes, Japanese and Chinese gardens, and a Thai temple: Westpark has something special to offer. It belongs to Munich’s most popular leisure areas for this reason. It was founded on the occasion of the International Garden Show in Munich in 1983. Responsible for the design of the Westpark was the landscape architect Peter Kluska.

The highlight of the park is the “Sea Scene” with a seating capacity of 1200 people. In summer the audience has the opportunity to listen to concerts and see theater performances. The open-air cinema is especially popular and can be visited during the summer months.

The extensive green areas of the Westpark make for pleasant walks for the whole family, children can frolic and play here, and in the summer afternoon games are often held there. Numerous playgrounds have been created with all children’s wishes and needs in mind. In winter, the park’s five hills are great for sledding.

Specially designated Westpark picnic area is very popular. When the weather is good, the appetizing smell of meat cooked on coals spreads far beyond this corner.
